WSC SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM W/ MIKE HENSHAW

Westbury Soccer Club incorporates professional training at all levels starting with the U9 level. WSC Training & Development is provided by Boss Training & Development which is overseen by Coach Mike Henshaw. Coach Henshaw provides a developmental program for levels U9, U10 and professional training for U11 on up.

The developmental program is designed to develop the skill sets of all players on each team. The program focuses on health conditioning, ball-work, positions, field tactics, sportsmanship & character building through TEAM sports. The central point of this program is that all players during the development years must be given the opportunity to learn the game of soccer in the broadest sense while playing in the HYSA DIVISION IV recreational bracket. The development program is designed to prepare players for competitive levels of play starting at U11.

WSC COACHING & TRAINING MODEL

WESTBURY SOCCER CLUB is a PROFESSIONAL YOUTH SOCCER CLUB whose emphasis remains on the idea of “CLUB”. WSC for over 35 years, as a non-profit organization, has emphasized quality over quantity. Fitting out at nearly 400 active players and producing 4 HYSA LEAGUE teams annually, WSC has never aspired to be the largest club, preferring to offer a smaller, professional ACADEMY CLUB environment whose training model is based on player development first. The WSC model continues the traditional approach of player development combining the use of LICENSED YOUTH COACHES & LICENSED PROFESSIONAL TRAINERS to deliver a broader, more grounded teaching platform to our youth as both aspiring soccer players and citizens of our community. For over three decades, WSC has provided a proven system that begins at the recreational level (DIV-4) and continues to all levels of competitive play, IE: DIV-3, DIV-2, Super-2 and DIV-1. The kids and parents that register with WSC do so to participate in this proven system. Our system is designed to keep players together as long as possible, therefore placing equal importance on both the journey as well as the game itself. We strongly avoid fringe, rogue and/or outside coaching methodologies, as ultimately, we are responsible for proving our kids with a proven philosophy and approach. WSC Youth Coaches, who are assigned WSC teams, are required to implement the model while maintaining a professional standard at all times. Being the Youth Coach of a WSC TEAM is a privilege….not a right and subject to continual certification and review. However, because our model is a dual approach combining Youth Coach and Trainer, we encourage both to actively participate in the process.  The WSC model is unique in today’s market and no longer utilized in modern (for-profit) soccer clubs where all coaching is left entirely to the Training Department. The result of our approach is a CLUB that provides the right balance offering a professional environment that feels like a neighborhood club.

THE WSC LINEAR MODEL: U5 through U19
IN-HOUSE PROGRAM: U5, U6, U7 & U8
This program at U5, U6 & U7 is designed, simply, to be FUN. The central point of this program is for kids to develop the “passion” to play the game if for no other reason but to have fun. Enjoying the non-competitive game at its purist is central to this program. At U8, while the focus remains on having fun, the introduction of developmental concepts begins to slowly enter. A 5v5 field shape is central at this point setting the stage for further development in the years to come.

HYSA LEAGUE RECREATIONAL PLAY: U9 & U10
Every Fall, 4 new league teams are formed from our IN-HOUSE recreational program; 2 boys and 2 girls teams. Our program starting at U9 introduces Developmental Training which offers a broader more extensive skill development approach, including concepts such as individual skills, tactical skills, and character development through TEAM sports. This Developmental Training program lasts for 2 years (4 seasons). U9-U10 teams receive one professional training session per week from the Club training arm; BOSS TRAINING as they play the 8v8 SMALL-SIDED format in DIV-4. The second session is provided by the Youth Coach. Youth Coaches and trainers are encouraged to work together to develop a weekly strategy in preparation for game day. Both are also encouraged to create sessions that promote both soccer and life skills development.

HYSA AND EDDOA COMPETITIVE LEAGUE PLAY: U11-U19
The WSC program starting at U11 provides access to the competitive levels of play. U11-U12 competitive Teams are assigned a permanent trainer as they begin at DIV-3 and transition to DIV-2 playing the 8v8 SMALL–SIDED format. U11 competitive teams require a minimum of one trainer session per week starting from this point forward. At this point the WSC model offers training to teams based on the number of sessions requested. Competitive teams can choose to add sessions to the base amount as needed or based on level of play. Starting at U13 competitive teams will transition to 11v11 FULL-SIZED games playing on 120 yard fields. It is recommended that training sessions increase to two sessions per week as teams use this period to prepare for qualification at the SUPER -2 level. At U15, competitive teams are encouraged to qualify and transition to the SUPER -2 and/or DIVISION -1 level. This status, fully supported by licensed youth coaches and professional training, will extend through to U19 and the completion a CLUB SOCCER career.
